Son aves pelárgicas, cuya longitud varía entre los 16 y 25 cm. Vuelan rápida y erráticamente a poca distancia del agua. Se alimentan de pequeños organismos planctónicos que capturan de una manera característica, poniendo las patas en contacto con el agua, dando la impresión de caminar sobre ella.
Ponen un solo huevo blanco, relativamente grande para el tamaño del ave.
A esta familia pertenecen las Golondrinas de Mar, las especies Chilenas son:
- Golondrina de mar, Oceanites oceanicus.
- Golondrina de mar chica, Oceanites gracilis
- Golondrina de mar subantártica, Garrodia nereis
- Golondrina de mar de vientre blanco, Fregetta grallaria
- Golondrina de mar de vientre negro, Fregetta tropica
- Golondrina de mar de garganta blanca, Nesofregetta albigularis
- Golondrina de mar peruana, Oceanodroma tethys
- Golondrina de mar negra, Oceanodroma markhami
- Golondrina de mar de collar, Oceanodroma hornbyi
